Why I Decided to Go Natural

My natural hair journey is not hard to comprehend. When I was younger, I always wanted to have hair like my friends...long, straight and silky. However, with tight curls and what appeared to be short hair, I begged my mother for a relaxer. It took a while before she said yes, no thanks to the Jerry Curl (sorry but that's not what I asked for). But I digress. It was until sixth grade when I was granted my wish. Yes! My hair was long and straight. Later in life, my hair got longer (not due to the relaxer) but became brittle and damaged after while (due to the relaxer). It was until then when I was relaxing my hair; I was smoothing the remainder of the product in my hair. A bit of the product dripped onto my bathroom counter top. As I wiped the counter with a plain paper towel, a portion of paint and dirt was removed. Wow! Did this relaxer get rid of a section of paint? That’s some strong stuff. Of course, the relaxer's main ingredient is Sodium Hydroxide. I learned in Chemistry class that Sodium Hydroxide is a major ingredient in oven and drain cleaners. And we all know that it can irritate or burn if it comes in contact with skin. I had the burns on my scalp and on top of my ears, but I would cover it up and go about my day. But I could never forget what it did to my counter top. My hair was still longer but it was dry and brittle at the same time. So, a couple of years late while in college, I decided to put my knowledge of science and natural ingredients to the test. I was my own guinea pig, mixing and adding organics to my hair. I saw tremendous results with my hair growth. However, I felt that I was still missing something.

And that's when I finally decided and got the guts to appreciate and go back to my ROOTS. Honestly, the chemicals we that have access to are just to strong and damaging to our hair and skin. It was so annoying to perm and wash my hair and have to add what felt like the whole bottle of oil to moisturizer my hair, ugh. Now here it is, I'm running late because my hair is dry and not cooperating with me. Yea, when I was finally done with my hair, I was frustrated all over again. Why you ask? Because my hair was a grease ball.GROSS! That's what chemicals do to your hair-strip it's natural oils. So it natural from here on out-natural hair and natural products. No more burning my scalp or ears for silky hair and I am proud to say that I am not ashamed of my hair. My hair is kinky, beautiful and most importantly, healthy and strong. And as I understand it, that is GOOD HAIR.
